Why You Make Worse Decisions in 35°C: The Physiology of Holiday Heat

There's a specific, recognisable version of a holiday argument: it's mid-afternoon, everyone is hot, someone snaps over something trivial — where to eat, who read the map wrong, why the queue is taking so long — and within minutes it's escalated into something that, looked back on from an air-conditioned evening, seems wildly disproportionate. This isn't really about the queue. It's about what heat is doing to the brain, and it's worth taking seriously rather than writing off as bad luck or bad tempers.


Dehydration Reaches the Brain Before It Reaches Anywhere Else Noticeable

The body's water balance affects cognition well before someone would describe themselves as "thirsty" in any urgent sense. Even mild dehydration — a level easy to reach on a hot travel day spent walking, often with less water intake than usual and more alcohol or caffeine than usual — has been linked in research to reduced concentration, slower reaction times, increased perceived effort for ordinary tasks, and a measurable dip in mood, including greater irritability and fatigue. Crucially, the sensation of thirst is a lagging indicator: by the time you consciously feel thirsty, mild dehydration's cognitive effects may already be underway. This matters enormously for travel specifically, because a typical sightseeing day — hours of walking outdoors, in unfamiliar heat, often without the routine water access people have at home — is close to a perfect storm for exactly this kind of low-grade, unnoticed dehydration.



Heat Itself Impairs Judgment, Separately From Dehydration

Beyond fluid loss, elevated body and ambient temperature has its own direct effects on cognitive performance. The body spends real physiological resources trying to cool itself — redirecting blood flow to the skin, increasing heart rate, sweating — and this competes with the resources available for sustained attention and complex decision-making. Research on heat and cognitive performance has generally found that tasks requiring sustained concentration, working memory, or complex decision-making show measurable decline as ambient temperature rises into uncomfortable ranges, even in otherwise healthy adults. This is part of why decisions made in the hottest part of a hot day — which route to take, whether to argue with a taxi driver over a fare, whether now is the moment to have a difficult conversation with a travel companion — tend to be worse decisions than the same choices made in the cool of the morning or evening.



Heat and Aggression: A Genuinely Studied Link

There's a long-standing and reasonably well-supported body of research connecting higher ambient temperature with increased irritability and a lower threshold for aggressive or confrontational behaviour. The proposed mechanisms vary — physiological discomfort lowering patience directly, heat disrupting sleep the night before and leaving people more reactive the next day, or simply the cumulative frustration of being uncomfortable for hours at a stretch — but the pattern itself, across various studies of heat and conflict, shows up consistently enough to be taken seriously rather than dismissed as folk wisdom. This offers a genuinely useful reframe for holiday arguments: the underlying trigger is very often heat-driven physiological stress, misattributed by both people in the argument to whatever topic happened to be on the table when tempers frayed.



Sleep Disruption Compounds Everything

Heat doesn't just affect people during the day — it affects them overnight, particularly in destinations or accommodations without reliable air conditioning. Poor sleep, in turn, independently produces almost the exact same symptoms as mild dehydration and heat stress: reduced patience, worse decision-making, heightened emotional reactivity. A traveller who slept badly in a hot room, then spent a full day dehydrated and overheated, is often dealing with three compounding sources of impaired judgment simultaneously — which goes a long way toward explaining why the "we're never coming back here" argument on holiday so often erupts on day three or four of a hot trip, once the cumulative effect has built up, rather than on day one.



What Actually Helps

The genuinely useful, unglamorous takeaways are simple and don't require any special holiday wisdom: drink water on a schedule rather than waiting for thirst, since thirst is a late signal rather than an early one; treat the hottest hours of the day (typically early-to-mid afternoon) as a poor window for anything requiring patience or complex decisions, including exactly the sort of logistics conversations and negotiations that travel keeps forcing on people; and treat a bad night's sleep in the heat as a real contributing factor to the next day's mood, not a separate issue.


None of this makes the queue move faster or the map easier to read. But recognising that a chunk of "holiday tension" is physiological rather than personal — that the argument is partly your body's stress response to heat and fluid loss wearing a costume made of whatever trivial disagreement happened to be nearby — tends to make it a good deal easier to let go of once the temperature, and the tempers, come back down.
