A ROMAN PIZZA TOUR WITH LUCIA

Our food tour will be centered in Rione Monti, a district rich in historical monuments and churches and considered the prettiest, most characteristic and off the beaten track district in Rome. With an  amazing medieval atmosphere setting through a maze of lanes and alleys with many small family-run shops and restaurants and bars to explore. You will be guided step by step through this first and most ancient district of Rome through little alleys, with ancient medieval towers, where you can still see the authentic parts of Rome and enter local family run shops and savour authentic pizza with all its many different ingredients, shapes and styles of baking.

You learn about Italian-style soft drinks like CHINOTTO while enjoying the neighborhood, filled with Romans, discovering some cultural aspects of this area which has a lot to tell.. The first stop is at a hundred year-old bakery where you will be introduced to PIZZA ALLA TEGLIA cooked in a special baking tin. You will also learn about the three different ways of making Italian pizzas and their relation with history in this very charming retro-style bakery.

The second stop is in a Deli or Gastronomia as a local would say. Here you will taste pure, artisan ingredients used as toppings for the different types of pizza (Margherita, Capricciosa, etc) and also learn which topping to add while baking. It will also be the right time to savour the 1932 first typical Italian soft drink called CHINOTTO. After the Deli stop on your Rome Pizza Tour, we visit the heart of the Monti District where our guide will share information and anecdotes about this area of Rome also famous for housing her majesty the Flavian Amphitheatre, aka the Colosseum.

The next stop presents sliced PIZZA ALLA PALA, cooked this time not in a tin but on oven flint rock. The next historical stop leads us to the most famous and largest Basilica, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Completed in the year 440 AD according to the Mussolinian 1929 Lateran Treaty, the Basilica, located in Italian territory is owned by the Holy See and enjoys extraterritorial status similar to that of foreign embassies.  It is here that our POPE FRANCESCO celebrated his first mass as a Pope. Here you will also discover the tomb of one of the most important Italian Artists, Gianlorenzo Bernini and of Paoline Bonaparte, Napoleon's sister. The final stop on the Rome Pizza Tour will let you sit and stretch your legs in a WOOD OVEN PIZZERIA, where you will have the chance to relax and enjoy the art of making pizza.
