WHAT VULCANO HAS TO OFFER
The Gran Cratere
The ascent of the Gran Cratere is undoubtedly the most thrilling and iconic excursion on Vulcano. Far from being a strenuous climb, it is a scenic walk through broom shrubs and solidified lava along the volcano’s slopes. As you ascend, you can quite literally feel the mountain breathe: fumaroles release dense clouds of steam and gas from the crater’s mouth, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. At the summit, the ground turns vivid shades of yellow and ochre, opening onto the funnel-shaped crater itself. Accompanied by expert guides, visitors can walk along the crater’s rim and across the Piano Delle Fumarole, wearing masks or handkerchiefs to soften the intense sulphur scent. Around you lie extraordinary formations of alum, sulphur and melted metals, with temperatures reaching up to 400°C. The reward is an incomparable view: the Aeolian archipelago seemingly resting in the palm of your hand, distant islands appearing to float above the sea.
Gelso Village
To the south of the island lies Gelso, a tiny village nestled between the old lighthouse and Punta Bandiera. Its peaceful, timeless atmosphere offers a striking contrast to the lively harbour area. Just outside the village stands Madonna delle Grazie, the first church ever built on Vulcano. On the first Sunday of July, the vulcanari honour tradition by carrying the Virgin in a boat procession from Scario al Faro to Punta Bandiera. Visitors are also drawn to Gelso’s beautiful black-sand beaches, Spiaggia di Cannitello and Spiaggia dell’Asino. Before leaving this solitary and captivating corner of the island, stop at a local trattoria to savour fresh fish, Vulcano’s goat cheese and ricotta, accompanied by a glass of robust red wine.
Beaches of Vulcano
Vulcano’s coastline offers a remarkable variety of volcanic beaches, each with its own character:
-
Porto Ponente Black Sand Beach – a striking reminder of the island’s volcanic origins
-
Fumarole Beach – where the sea is naturally warmed by underwater hot springs
-
Gelso Beach – peaceful and panoramic, with views stretching to the Sicilian coast and Mount Etna
-
Asino Beach – intimate and secluded, reachable by land or sea, perfect for moments of quiet together
Sabbie Nere (Sabbienere) Beach
Set like a precious gem in Baia di Ponente, Sabbie Nere is a simple yet enchanting black-sand beach that captivates from dawn to dusk. Its shallow waters make it ideal for children, while its crystal-clear sea attracts snorkellers and divers alike. Lively during high season, it becomes particularly magical at sunset, when the sky turns deep shades of red — the perfect backdrop for a romantic aperitif.
Acque Calde Beach
Also known as the Vulcano Thermal Baths, Acque Calde Beach lies in the unspoilt Baia di Levante. Characterised by fine black sand, this beach is famous for its warm, mineral-rich waters, creating a natural open-air swimming pool. Renowned for their therapeutic properties, these waters are especially beneficial for skin health and sensitivity. A place to slow down, unwind and indulge in nature’s own spa.
Asino Beach
An exclusive oasis of black sand surrounded by tranquillity and silence — perfect for those seeking privacy and serenity.
Cannitello Beach
A charming black-sand beach on the south-eastern side of Vulcano, overlooking the Strait of Messina. Less accessible and therefore less crowded, Cannitello rewards visitors with clear waters and shallow, sandy seabeds — ideal for relaxed swimming in an unspoilt setting.
WHAT CAN I DO HERE
Thermal Mud Baths & Natural Springs
Immerse yourself in Vulcano’s renowned mud baths, one of the island’s most iconic experiences. There are three different types of mud and thermal spring waters to enjoy. The abundant Pozza dei Fanghi (Mud Well) is rich in sulphur, with constant bubbling that releases sulphurous gases, mineral-rich saline water and clay-based mud.
Nearby, the warm sea and natural thermal water zones offer another way to benefit from Vulcano’s geothermal energy. Beneath the surface, dozens of underwater fumaroles release vapour, creating a natural hydro-massage effect. The benefits are felt almost immediately, leaving the body relaxed and revitalised.
Explore by Scooter or Quad
Rent a scooter or quad bike and set off to explore Vulcano at your own pace. Wind through quiet streets and hidden alleys, discovering lesser-known corners of the island and enjoying the freedom of off-the-beaten-track adventures.
Private Boat Experiences
Rent a boat and discover the Aeolian Islands from the sea — one of the most beautiful ways to experience this archipelago. Boats and dinghies are available with or without a skipper and are modern, comfortable and fully equipped. Cruise to nearby islands such as Lipari, Salina or Panarea for lunch at a waterfront restaurant, or remain on board and enjoy a gourmet picnic prepared by the chef.
Diving & Snorkelling Adventures
Vulcano offers extraordinary underwater landscapes, ideal for both diving and snorkelling enthusiasts.
-
Capo Grillo – one of the island’s best snorkelling spots, featuring a dramatic vertical wall colonised by sponges and sea stars, with rocky coves home to anemones, octopus, moray eels, parrotfish and stone bream
-
Capo Testa Grossa & Quaglietto Cliff – at a depth of 25 metres lies a statue of the Virgin Mary, surrounded by vibrant red cherry shrimp
-
Sirenetta Cliff – a gently sloping vertical wall descending from 16 to 40 metres, where sulphur springs tint the sand and marine life includes scorpionfish, crinoids, sponges, pentagon starfish, anthias and damselfish
-
Franata Archipelago (north of Vulcanello) – a captivating snorkelling and diving area where Posidonia meadows lead to a steep slope plunging to depths of around 50 metres, offering a truly unique experience for advanced divers
Eat, Eat… and Eat Some More
Food lovers will be in paradise. Indulge in traditional Aeolian and Sicilian cuisine: grilled chicken or mutton, fresh seafood such as shrimps and mussels, totani ripieni, spaghetti neri di seppia, and involtini di pesce spada grilled over open flames. All perfectly accompanied by a good house wine — and, of course, finished with a classic Sicilian dessert.
